SOUND BENDING LIGHT
Sasha Raphael vom Dorp is a native of Taos, New Mexico and now lives and works in Los Angeles. Sasha’s “Sound Illuminator” (pictured above) uses sound vibrations, light, and water allowing the creation of unique, never to be repeated images captured on film.
“I’ve built a machine in an attempt to observe elemental transactions. I’ve created a mechanical solution to what is a metaphysical problem, forcing basic elements of perception – sound, light, and matter – into a single frame. As the sound unfolds, it ripples through the water in distinct geometric patterns, bending, twisting and playing with the light. Sound and light are reflective of one another. The Sound Illuminator allows the observer to enter that dynamic relationship with its infinite possibilities.” – Sasha Raphael vom Dorp
