The third artist feature for the FUTRA X UNION ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROJECT is PEXELS by lighting designer Pete Thornbury. PEXELS are pixels that have escaped their usual screens and squares, no longer constrained to grids or retina displays they are free to weave throughout any space indoors and out. Combining creatively arranged strands of addressable LED’s with a customized real-time software control system; PEXELS are site-specific art installations with audio-reactive capabilities. They rely not only on the architectural elements, but also the auditory landscape of the environment they exists in. PEXELS can be displayed in any color combination, sculptural formation, and they can programmed to change in speed and color to create movement within the form.
The PEXELS light-art installation covering the entire ceiling in the NOISE ROOM at UNION will debut at the CYCLONE x DECIBEL: Dyed Soundorom event on Friday, November 17th happening from 9pm – 9am. For this special 12-hour event featuring music by Dyed Soundorom, Orazio Rispo, Droog, HAAS, Matt Ossentjuk, and Nordic Soul; FUTRA is working with the CYCLONE visual team who created their own projection-mapped video and sculptural installation. We are looking forward to this impressive event and collaborating with CYCLONE, DECIBEL, and UNION. Tickets and info can be found here: UNION.COM
The FUTRA X UNION ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROJECT continues with designer and animator ANDREWKNIVES. The inspiration for his 6 minute, stop-motion animation ‘EMULATED ELUCIDATION’, is drawn from a mind-bending imagined tropical paradise. Vivid colors intertwined with dreamy kaleidoscopic landscapes play off an underlying tone of technology. His TV static and computer error screens in combination with vibrant psychotropics offer the viewer a surreal psychedelic visual experience. ‘EMULATED ELUCIDATION’ intersection of a warm-paradise and a cold, cyber-world will debut in the LOFT at UNION on Friday, October 20th at George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, DāM-FunK & Funkmosphere. His large-scale video installation will be on view at UNION through December.
The FUTRA X UNION ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROJECT begins with the audio visual design group CLOAKING. Working predominately in real-time video or generative visuals, they create site specific installations using projection mapping and audio reactive content combined with architecture and sound. Over the past year CLOAKING has appeared in most major U.S. cities and is regularly programming and performing at parties in the LA underground. A recent performance at The Regent for the DAIS RECORDS’ 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY received rave reviews – the visuals set the tone and turned the evening into a concept.
We are very excited for this first FUTRA x UNION visual arts and music collaboration. For the kick-off event, CLOAKING is creating a projection mapping installation titled PHOSPHOR that will debut in the NOISE ROOM on Friday, September 15th at Decibel & Union presents Kenny Larkin and John Tejada. The installation will consist of suspended sculptures with signature CLOAKING visuals in green and blue hues inspired by the P1 phosphor on early monochrome monitors. More information on Friday’s DECIBEL & UNION event with Detroit native Kenny Larkin and the very special guest John Tejada can be found here.
FUTRA is excited to announce an ongoing artist-in-residence at UNION — essentially where an art gallery and club come together. FUTRA will curate and feature visual artists in the many rooms at UNION. The artwork will be on display on a semi-permanent basis ranging from one night to several months depending on each artist and installation. We are looking for art that can be experienced in a club environment: VIDEO, FILM, LIGHT-BASED, INSTALLATION, EXPERIMENTAL ART AND TECHNOLOGY, SCULPTURE, 2D AND MIXED MEDIA that is visible in a dark setting. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org with your questions and proposals.
