FUTRA presents OP ART

Posted By futra / July, 7, 2016 / 0 comments

OP ART

On Saturday, August 13th, FUTRA reveals OP ART, a one-day multimedia event presenting work from 30 visual artists, performers, and musicians at CIVIC CENTER STUDIOS a beautiful 8,000 sq-ft studio space with views overlooking DTLA.

Optical Art plays with the perception of our physical reality, delving into illusions that seep out of hypnotic geometries, immersive experiences, and confounding alterations of space and time. It disrupts the dialogue between the mind and body, while exposing the hyper-reality of our veiled digital age.

SURRENDER YOUR SENSES AND IMMERSE YOURSELF INTO THE SIMULATED REALITY of OP ART.

DJs will provide a kinetic soundscape to complement a curated exhibition of optical art, video, installation, fashion, experimental art and performances by contemporary artists and visionaries. OP ART FASHION is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED.

On Saturday, November 7th, FUTRA presents PANGEA. The second in a series of concept-driven shows, this one-day event will inhabit the LOT 613 warehouse gallery in the DTLA Arts District with an immersive multi-media experience.

PANGEA: pan- (all, entire, whole) + gaia (earth, land)
PANGEA is the last known supercontinent to have existed on our planet, and can be thought of as another name for Earth, specifically a unified Earth. Predictions for the formation of the next unified PANGEA estimate that it tremors in front of us from an equidistant future horizon. Ebbing in time, bursting together and apart, we barely notice the eternal movement of the earth at these glacial speeds. We’ve invited artists to perform or exhibit nature-themed artwork that is either decorative in design or politically driven; using natural materials, inspired by artistic movements such as Earth Art, Environmental Art, Land Art, and/or work that portrays concepts of FUSION and NO BORDERS.

DJs and live music acts will provide a diverse and rich soundscape to complement a curated exhibition of painting, photography, mixed media, video, installation, and performance.

FUTRA presents Doubt (live)

Doubt (Mistress, Disposable Commodities) MPLS *LIVE
A veteran of the Midwest electronic underground, Doubt is the new alias of a Minneapolis artist who has earned a reputation among aficionados of electronic music as one of the most inspired, engaging, and entertaining artists of his time. A true musician’s musician, he routinely reaches for unconventional elements and seamlessly blends disparate styles to create completely unique sonic experiences, which hit all of the right buttons.

Doubt’s first release is on Mistress, the secret weapon sub label from DVS1 (HUSH). Remember Fono and Beauty have garnered early acclaim, featured in Mixmag and highly reviewed in Resident Advisor; “Remember Phono” pivots on a metallic swing while a mournful melody swoons in the background. “Not Before” matches its unstable core elements with a pummeling techno beat.” LISTEN

Doubt then released Chaos Om Vision I and Chaos Vision II with Midwest based boutique label Disposable Commodities. Exploring “the edges of lo-fi techno shamanism imbuing his compositions with murky grime, distortion, dissonant harmonies and the sound of decay while still maintaining versatility as a DJ weapon that can be played in the club sphere.” LISTEN

Raíz (Droid Behavior, VRV) LA
Producers and label owners Vangelis and Vidal Vargas have performed worldwide from North America to Europe to Japan. Through their connection with Drumcell they developed the label, production group and music collective Droid Behavior. Aside from curating forward thinking events such as Interface, Raíz have released affective music on labels including Electric Deluxe, Historia Y Violencia, Droid Recordings and their own label VRV. As performers, Raíz fully harness the capabilities of technology to create a thick blend of Detroit-influenced techno and hard, gritty house. Years of production experience inform their Live PA / Digital DJ hybrid approach, as they layer each track’s core essentials and live improvisation to craft sets into a unique and narrative arch. Their releases follow suit, drawing from their musical training and diverse influences, to shape elegant and deep tracks. LISTEN

Dazz Moov (Futra) LA
Adept at mixing a dynamic soundscape of heavy bass, chopped up drum patterns, and infectious rhythms, Dazz Moov pays respect to the classic history of dance culture while seamlessly injecting forward thinking music. His solid foundation in drum & bass, house, and techno was forged back in the 90′s while shooting footage of live performances and updating the vast catalog for Groovetech Seattle where he hosted a weekly show. Never one to sit still his pursuit of quality music and the deep desire to learn more about its cultures has taken him to Barcelona, Berlin, and Tokyo where he performed and captured video of events and notable individuals who are defining those cities. LISTEN

Natology presents Pseudo & Morph featuring Jos McKain’s performance Oxidation and visuals by video artist Lindsay Scoggins. Pseudo & Morph is a meditative performance on the devolution of the human body and its ability to shift into an amorphous state. This meditation is intended to diffuse gender pairing, silhouetting a nude male and juxtaposing him against Scoggins’ signature video work. The ideas center on replication as a form of evolution, both intellectually and socially. First the art becomes you, and then you become the art.

Jos McKain (MOMA PS1, LACMA, MOCA) *PERFORMANCE ART
Jos McKain is a classically trained and self-taught dance maker and performance artist. He approaches performances as a shamanic ritual where the heightened state of performance acts as a trance-like state. His work reflects formative years spent on an Indian Reservation and training the classical East Indian Kathak. Since then his practice includes Dunham Technique, West African forms, yoga, Tai Chi, and extensive training in modern. McKain has curated shows for Machine Project, Highways Performance Space, and EDC. His venue credits include Carnegie Hall, MOMA PS1, LACMA, and MOMA. He has appeared in work by Ryan Heffington, WIFE, Mariana Abramovic, Scott Benzel, Daft Punk, and Mike Kelley. WATCH

Lindsay Scoggins (GUGGENHEIM) *VIDEO INSTALLATION
Lindsay Scoggins is a LA-based multimedia artist, filmmaker, and pioneer in YouTube video art. Influenced by a classical musical education, her interests in new media developed through her infatuation with audio’s essential functions in cinema. Scoggins’ began working with video installation, using YouTube as an online gallery, and soon began to attract millions of viewers. In 2010, she was chosen as a finalist for Guggenheim’s YouTube play: A Biennial of Creative Video. As a result she’s exhibited at the Guggenheim in NYC, Venice, Bilbao, and Berlin. WATCH

FUTRA begins at 10PM with bass heavy resident Dazz Moov. Entry is $5 until 11PM and $10 after with RSVP – $15 without RSVP. The visual art experience curated by Natalogy, Pseudo & Morph, is set for 11PM. Raíz of Droid Behavior/VRV will entice and set the mood. Doubt’s live set will feature mostly unreleased material rebuilt from the ground up over 8 channels.

FUTRA presents…

Cosmin TRG (50 Weapons) Romania/Berlin
COSMIN TRG FACEBOOK

Romanian Cosmin TRG now has two albums to his name on Modeselektor’s fiercely individual 50 Weapons. The stylistic distance between each is huge, proving him to be a restless producer content only with innovating and exploring, rather than treading the same sonic waters. Veering from rusted, fizzing low frequency techno to more stripped back and melodically advance electronica, the Berlin based artist is also a revered DJ with his own unique voice and a regular and respected guest in clubs and at festivals worldwide.

Subversive (Droid Behavior) LA
SUBVERSIVE WEBSITE

Subversive has been a DJ and part of Droidbehavior since the late 90s. In those times Techno was hard and acts like Surgeon, Jeff Mills, Adam Beyer and Regis were pumping out epic tracks. The Detroit, Birmingham and Berlin styles of that era all influenced Subversive and it can be heard in his DJ sets. In the early stages Subversive mixed on three turntables when he had the opportunity. Fast paced mixing, effects and turntable tricks could typically be heard during his sets. Today, Subversive’s mixing has matured into a well developed sound that attempts to bridge the past with the present. He uses software along with hardware synths and turntables in order to create a more unique sound that reflects the future of what Techno can be. Subversive has had the privilege to mix along side some of his respected contemporaries like DJ Bone, Sandwell District, Surgeon, John Tejada, Rrose, and Ben Klock.

Ricky Def (Futra) LA

Carefully attuned to the established and emergent genres of dance music, Ricky Def draws from house, techno, and UK garage to forge a sound that is as provocative as it is gratifying. A throwback to dj’s a generation ago, Ricky eschews digital artifice to rely on his staggering and coveted collection of vinyl and acetates. FUTRA PRESENTS…

Objekt (Hessle Audio) Berlin
OBJEKT FACEBOOK
OBJEKT SOUNDCLOUD
OBJEKT WEBSITE

Objekt is TJ Hertz’s adventures in machine music built to make subs rattle and feet wiggle; a convoluted mess of elektrology and teknology, 3-step, bass-core, post windmill, proto-minimal wankstep, gondola, shithouse, acid wonk, no more, no less.

What began as two unassuming whitelabels at the start of 2011 has led to a bewildering, pan-genre spaceship ride through international acclaim from artists as diverse as Aphex Twin, Surgeon, Francois K, 2562, Blawan and god knows how many more; remixes for Radiohead and SBTRKT; mixes and podcasts for all the usual suspects; a release on London’s inimitable Hessle Audio imprint and dozens of performances all over the world. But while his releases – twisted and irreverent sure but, let’s face it, ultimately still bass-fueled dancefloor bangers – have been busy bruising soundsystems and finding their way onto most end-of-year lists in electronic music, his DJ sets betray a much broader gamut of influences than his productions might suggest. From gurgling industrial weirdery through to both very classic and very experimental techno, racy 90’s and 00’s electro, IDM and more, his recorded mixes demonstrate this admirably, gliding seamlessly through artists as diverse as Jeff Mills, Alva Noto, DJ Stingray, Alex Cortex, DVS1, Emptyset and Alec Empire… all the while keeping a watchful eye on the dancefloor but unafraid to test the allegience of the dancers.

TJ Hertz was born in Toyko, raised in the UK and currently lives in Berlin, where he works as a DSP developer for Native Instruments.

Los Angeles born and bred, Vangelis and Vidal Vargas were raised in the ’80s on a steady diet of Latin freestyle, electro, and new wave that pervaded their urban environment. Their father also exposed them to cutting edge progressive acts Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk, planting early seeds for aural exploration. By the mid ’90s they were sampling LA’s underground club scene and heavily researching electronic music’s roots. After years of influence they began to express their musical vision through their own recordings and performances. Vidal and Vangelis eventually found common ground with producer / performer Drumcell, and in 2002 they formed the Droid Behavior event production group and record label out of frustration with the city’s lack of knowledge, acceptance, and understanding for Midwest-bred techno and house music and their European counterparts.

As producers Vangelis and Vidal have released and licensed original music and remixes under various aliases (most notably Acid Circus and Raíz) on the Droid Recordings imprint as well as respected labels Historia y Violencia, Tora Tora Tora, DJMag, Music Man, Resident Advisor, Enemy Rec, Gynoid, Reloading, Micro.Fon and Timefog. Their music has been charted, played and supported by Speedy J, Chris Liebing, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, DVS1, Levon Vincent, Jonas Kopp, and more.

Raíz fully harness the capabilities of Traktor, Ableton, and Maschine technology to create a thick blend of Detroit influenced techno and gritty house. They take cues from years of classical training to infuse dynamic musical expression with a delicate balance of mixing board acrobatics and symbiotic intuition. Years of production experience inform their Live PA / Digital DJ hybrid approach, which uses each track’s core essentials to form a narrative arch for every unique set. Their releases follow suit, taking only key elements from each rhythmic style to shape simplistic and deep music that captures their diverse influences and personal impressions.

DARK SKY (50 Weapons, Black Acre) UK

DARK SKY SOUNDCLOUD

Tom, Matt and Carlo together make up the London based production and DJ unit Dark Sky. Having met at music college, Dark Sky formed in 2008 out of a mutual love for the ever evolving London electronic music scene, a love that the trio have always reflected through not only their DJ sets but also their productions, drawing influences from original UK garage through to house, via drum & bass and hip hop. It wasn’t long before their forward thinking outlook on production and DJing got noticed and their debut 12″ was picked up by the Bristol imprint Black Acre. The release was met by rave reviews and since then further releases have been signed with consistent success to Pictures Music, Ninja Tune, Blunted Robots and Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons imprint.

“Dark Sky are winning fans by daring to be experimental, diverse and multi-textured but also noisily and thrillingly addictive” Resident Advisor “All things considered, the trajectory of London production trio Dark Sky is a little extraordinary. While most producers exercising within the soupy realm of dubstep, garage, funky and grime have fell victim to swells of hype and criticism as various buzz words and sonic trends zoom in and out of bass music fashion, these guys have stuck to a formula that benefits each song as a whole piece of music, as opposed to just focusing on staple elements reflective of the zeitgeist.” -Fact Magazine

An ear for propulsive rhythms and a penchant for bleeding-edge technology has allowed Gervais to translate a youth immersed in electronic music into success as a beat-slinging veteran. The move towards live looping and custom edits eventually led to the studio. Christian Andersen has never been one for genres and his productions as XI are no exception. His production-style, while often given simple tags, deserves a more nuanced description: Chop-suey beats, combined with complex sampling techniques highlight some of XI’s strengths. However, it’s his ability to create depth and take listeners on a journey within his productions that has him at the forefront of the next wave of bass music.

With his story well underway, XI is quickly gaining a reputation for crafting bass music that maintains a respect for the past, while hinting strongly at the future of electronic music.

JIMMY EDGAR DJ SET (Hotflush, Warp) Berlin
JIMMY EDGAR FACEBOOK
JIMMY EDGAR WEBSITE

Lover. Fighter. Prophet. Freak magnet. Time-traveler. Musician, photographer and designer Jimmy Edgar is a wayward star-child streaking across the cosmic dance-floor. Endowed with a supernatural feel for futuristic funk, the Detroit native has been bleeping and grinding about the Milky Way since he was a teenage humanoid. While his peers were worrying about their grades and popularity Edgar was spinning alongside his hometown’s DJ heroes and programming intricate beats that were unquestionably interplanetary communication disguised as dance music.

Influenced mostly by Jazz, funk, street beat and r&b in these early years, he began his musical pursuit by playing the drums in experimental bands and by making tape recordings. Most of these recordings, consisting mainly of pitch bent tape loops, cut edits, field recordings, and noise tracks, were the beginning of his experimentation with the technical aspects of production.

Nowadays Jimmy Edgar resides in Berlin. This Detroit-born producer/singer’s music often evokes the ambience of a city where the weekends can last all week and sex swings form part of legitimate club-going practice. Since moving to the city and putting out his recent LP “Majenta” on Hotflush, the producer’s embrace of techno’s second birthplace appears complete.

ASC (Auxiliary, Nonplus) SD,UK
ASC FACEBOOK
ASC WEBSITE

Growing up in different areas of England, on a steady diet of Motown, Techno and the blossoming UK Hardcore scene, his productions manage to encompass such a wide range of these influences. Starting out DJ’ing with a bunch of like-minded friends on pirate radio stations while still in school, ASC soon found himself getting interested in how the tracks he was playing were made. This led to an investment in a modest studio setup, which proved to be a defining point in James’ life.

An initial batch of tracks were written between 1997-1999, and eventually a 7 track demo appeared, of which 6 were signed to West Midlands based Nu Directions, and the remaining track was signed to LTJ Bukem’s well known Good Looking Records. After a handful of successful releases on these labels and a few others, James started his own label, Covert Operations, which went on to put out a total of 30 vinyl releases & 8 CD’s between 2000 and 2009.

After receiving much praise for his intricately detailed and well thought out productions, ASC amassed a serious back catalogue of releases on some of the most forward thinking labels out there, such as 720 Degrees, Offshore, and Paradox’s Outsider label. 2010 has seen the release of Nothing Is Certain, the album James released on Instra:mental’s popular NonPlus+ label, to great critical acclaim. Widespread reviews have cited it as one of the best electronic music long players for the year. Hot on the heels of that, ASC has launched his new imprint, Auxiliary.

If this wasn’t enough to keep ASC busy, September 2010 saw the release of a project entitled ‘Music For Pictures’. Liquid Cinema’s head honcho Jeff Rona asked James to create a library of music strictly with the idea of them being used for TV, film and other forms of media in mind. The title was a nod to the classic Brian Eno LP. Music For Film, and what James has come up with, might well be praised with the same regard in many years to come.

You could say the future is bright for ASC, but that’s more than an understatement.

One of the emerging bright lights of Los Angeles’ club scene, Dahlia Lachs aka Modesty has begun to earn a reputation far beyond what her moniker suggests. Skillfully blending deep grooves with strong rhythms and a multitude of breaks, stutters, and effects, Modesty delivers sets that reflect her early Latin and disco influences but consistently finds ways to interpret, re-invent or advance these sounds in new directions with often surprising and unexpected results.

Since walking away from a career in fashion to pursue her musical interests, Lachs has continued to prove over and over again, her acumen and skill behind the decks performing regularly at underground events in Los Angeles, New York and Denver and earning coveted opening slots for internationally recognized producers such as Alex Under, Miss Fitz, Mikael Stavostrand, Ryan Crosson and Lee Curtiss. She has also played at events by internationally respected promotional outfits such as Droid Behaviour, Resolute NY, and Detroit Underground. In 2012, she performing at the annual Detroit Underground after party during Movement: Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival.

Modesty continues to hone her craft as a DJ performing as often as possible both at home and with an eye toward gigs abroad, and while admittedly “dabbling in some production”, unlike many other DJ/Producers she continues to explore the possibilities involved in what some might call a lost art, that of mixing records, pure and simple.

FUTRA PRESENTS…

GRENIER (Tectonic, Frite Nite) SF
GRENIER FACEBOOK

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dean J. Grenier, (A.K.A DJG), landed in the Bay Area underground dance music scene 2006 with his first 12” ”Shadow Skanking” b/w “Joyful Sound” on Narco.Hz, two slices of lithe, slick dubstep. Immediate airplay for “Joyful Sound” on Rinse FM and drops in the clubs from prominent DJs like N-Type quickly propelled DJG to the forefront of American bass music producers early on in his career.

Grenier’s production style is rich and welcoming, sometimes visceral but never anything less than evocative. Now considered a veteran of the American scene, Grenier (as DJG) self-released the two-disc Voids collection in 2010, revealing not only a clever grasp of dubstep and dnb but ambient soundscapes, and since then he’s released on labels like Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint, Headhunter’s Transistor, Frite Nite, Pushing Red and Wheel & Deal Records. Now operating under the name Grenier his recent productions see him moving in a more experimental direction, dropping the tempo to as low as 125BPM while playing around with rhythmic structures that hint at soulful house, garage, and other weird shapes, all imbued with the warm melodic embrace he’s always kept hidden beneath the beats. With forthcoming releases on Tectonic, Photek Productions, Get Darker and Frite Nite (with LA’s Salva), 2012 looks to be a banner year for Grenier, as he continues work on his debut album. DJs ranging from Mary Anne Hobbs, Mala, Pearson Sound, 2562, Pinch, Addison Groove, Salva, Photek, N-Type, Distal and many more have been supporting DJG’s recent and forthcoming releases.

Grenier’s performance behind the decks reveals a wide-ranging taste and smart grip on all sorts of music, elegantly-paced sets full of his own productions and like-minded efforts from others. His DJ talents have brought him all over the world, including a recent set at the legendary club Fabric in London and a tour around Europe in 2011, and back home in North America he’s headlined British Columbia’s Bass Coast Festival.

SALVA (Frite Nite, FoF Music) LA
SALVA FACEBOOK

Best known as a versatile solo producer and owner of the revered Frite Nite label (B. Bravo, Eprom, Ana Sia), Salva promotes complexity through a synthesis of contrasting styles. His label, which has emerged as one of North America’s premiere sources of West Coast electronic bass music, explores all corners of the electronic soundscape and harnesses diversity to produce composotions that transcend genre boundaries.

A Chicago native who developed his craft in San Francisco and currently resides in Los Angeles, Salva is an alum of the Red Bull Music Academy Class of 2011. He has produced exclusive mixes for Mary Anne Hobbs, The FADER, and XLR8R, while being asked to remix the likes of Miguel Migs, Rainbow Arabia, Om Unit and others. Honing his talents as one of the cornerstones of the Friends of Friends label alongside Shlohmo and Mexicans With Guns, Salva has released his debut full-length, ‘Complex Housing’, and the ‘Yellobone’ EP, both to critical acclaim (Pitchfork, FADER, FACT, and many others).

Salva’s audacity results in a complex collection of dips into house motifs, grooves in smooth boogie funk, and audience roiling massive bass waves. With support from BBC’s Benji B, the UK’s Night Slugs imprint (Bok Bok, Girl Unit), and the Low End Theory residents (Gaslamp Killer, DJ Nobody, Daddy Kev), it’s The FADER’s Julianne Shepherd that sums up the man best: “Paul Salva is a funky motherfucker”.

Forgetting bpm and genre to the masses, Distal relies only on his signature sound alone to leave its mark. He produces a wide array of moods, tempos and rhythms, often taking influences from his early childhood love of techno, jungle and hardcore.

In early 2010 Distal started his own label ‘Embassy Recordings’ with childhood friend Ethan Anderson (MITE). Soon there after in the summer of 2010 he would receive his inaugural physical vinyl release with the legendary label Soul Jazz Records. This would be the launch pad for his career landing him releases on stalwart labels such as Tectonic and Tube10 and performing at places like the world renowned Fabric in London touring globally alongside artists like Pearson Sound and Africa Hi Tech.

From his initial release in 2010 until now in 2012 Distal has put out almost a dozen 12” vinyl releases and many more digital releases, collaborations and remixes for prolific labels like Frite Nite and Trouble & Bass. But his biggest accomplishment to date is his newly released 14 track album on Tectonic titled ‘Civilization’

FUTRA PRESENTS

SUREFIRE SOUND SPRING TOUR 2012

~ In celebration of the Addison Groove “Transistor Rhythm” album and the Doc Daneeka & Benjamin Damage “They!Live” album – both released earlier this year on Modeselektor’s 50Weapons label~

ADDISON GROOVE (50Weapons/ Swamp 81/ Tectonic) UK
ADDISON GROOVE FACEBOOK

Addison Groove (aka Antony Williams) started life under a different pseudonym altogether. Recording as Headhunter, with an LP and 12” releases on the influential Tempa label stretching back to 2007, he achieved legendary status within the dubstep scene. His work at the deeper end of the spectrum graced the label an impressive 7 times, a figure matched only by Skream. This work looked set to continue until 2010 when, seemingly out of nowhere, he crafted one of the biggest bass music tracks of the decade, ‘Footcrab’, under the new name of Addison Groove.

The response to ‘Footcrab’ was phenomenal, receiving critical and commercial success in equal measure across the dance music scene. Getting plays not only from the dubstep DJs that Williams was used to reaching, it also found its way into the record boxes of techno and house heavyweights such as Aphex Twin, Surgeon, Ricardo Villalobos and Mr Scruff, bringing an enormous new audience to his music in the process. Taking influences from the Chicago ghetto tek and juke scenes, Addison Groove’s impact on UK bass music has been colossal and unprecedented, sparking a huge interest in these styles from his peers and the listening public alike.

Busy in the studio since 2008, their collaborations and original music have found their way onto some of the most seminal imprints in dance music today, with exponential growth on the horizon. RAIZ WEBSITE

As producers Vangelis and Vidal have released and licensed original music and remixes under various aliases (most notably Acid Circus and Raíz) on the Droid Recordings imprint as well as respected labels Historia y Violencia, Tora Tora Tora, DJMag, Music Man, Resident Advisor, and many more.

Futra Launch Party Feat DVS1, SAMO SOUND BOY, EEZIR, KNYPHY + VJ Fader + Artist Showcase

THE FUTRA LAUNCH PARTY FEATURING …

DVS1 (house, acid, classics set)
(Hush, Klockworks, Transmat) MPLS/Berlin

Zak aka DVS1 (devious one), is one of the most prominent figures in the Midwest/US dance music landscape today. A local DJ favorite since the mid nineties, DVS1 continues to move floors with a combination of deep musical knowledge, unparalleled enthusiasm, and a vinyl collection of more than 10,000 records. Zak’s deep roots and his bold and uncompromising nature have won him great respect as a passionate and outspoken defender and promoter (HUSH) of quality music.

Zak began DJing in New York in the early nineties, focusing on the acid sounds of that time. After relocating to Minneapolis in the mid 90’s, his style evolved, into something more complex, deeper and more rhythmic. Since then, he has branched out into a wide variety of sounds from hard and fast, to deep and hypnotic, to slow and soulful. Rather than giving limiting names to the genres he plays, he describes the music as beats, rhythms, textures, and colors. His philosophy is that the genre distinctions themselves aren’t important the emotional content of the music is. This focus is readily apparent in the way he moves crowds both literally and figuratively by fusing together sounds that paint coherent, evocative, and powerful moods that are always appropriate for the time and place he is playing.
