Objekt (Hessle Audio) Berlin
OBJEKT FACEBOOK
OBJEKT SOUNDCLOUD
OBJEKT WEBSITE
Objekt is TJ Hertz’s adventures in machine music built to make subs rattle and feet wiggle; a convoluted mess of elektrology and teknology, 3-step, bass-core, post windmill, proto-minimal wankstep, gondola, shithouse, acid wonk, no more, no less.
What began as two unassuming whitelabels at the start of 2011 has led to a bewildering, pan-genre spaceship ride through international acclaim from artists as diverse as Aphex Twin, Surgeon, Francois K, 2562, Blawan and god knows how many more; remixes for Radiohead and SBTRKT; mixes and podcasts for all the usual suspects; a release on London’s inimitable Hessle Audio imprint and dozens of performances all over the world. But while his releases – twisted and irreverent sure but, let’s face it, ultimately still bass-fueled dancefloor bangers – have been busy bruising soundsystems and finding their way onto most end-of-year lists in electronic music, his DJ sets betray a much broader gamut of influences than his productions might suggest. From gurgling industrial weirdery through to both very classic and very experimental techno, racy 90′s and 00′s electro, IDM and more, his recorded mixes demonstrate this admirably, gliding seamlessly through artists as diverse as Jeff Mills, Alva Noto, DJ Stingray, Alex Cortex, DVS1, Emptyset and Alec Empire… all the while keeping a watchful eye on the dancefloor but unafraid to test the allegience of the dancers.
TJ Hertz was born in Toyko, raised in the UK and currently lives in Berlin, where he works as a DSP developer for Native Instruments.
Raíz (Droid Behavior) LA
RAIZ FACEBOOK
RAIZ WEBSITE
Los Angeles born and bred, Vangelis and Vidal Vargas were raised in the ’80s on a steady diet of Latin freestyle, electro, and new wave that pervaded their urban environment. Their father also exposed them to cutting edge progressive acts Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk, planting early seeds for aural exploration. By the mid ’90s they were sampling LA’s underground club scene and heavily researching electronic music’s roots. After years of influence they began to express their musical vision through their own recordings and performances. Vidal and Vangelis eventually found common ground with producer / performer Drumcell, and in 2002 they formed the Droid Behavior event production group and record label out of frustration with the city’s lack of knowledge, acceptance, and understanding for Midwest-bred techno and house music and their European counterparts.
As producers Vangelis and Vidal have released and licensed original music and remixes under various aliases (most notably Acid Circus and Raíz) on the Droid Recordings imprint as well as respected labels Historia y Violencia, Tora Tora Tora, DJMag, Music Man, Resident Advisor, Enemy Rec, Gynoid, Reloading, Micro.Fon and Timefog. Their music has been charted, played and supported by Speedy J, Chris Liebing, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, DVS1, Levon Vincent, Jonas Kopp, and more.
Raíz fully harness the capabilities of Traktor, Ableton, and Maschine technology to create a thick blend of Detroit influenced techno and gritty house. They take cues from years of classical training to infuse dynamic musical expression with a delicate balance of mixing board acrobatics and symbiotic intuition. Years of production experience inform their Live PA / Digital DJ hybrid approach, which uses each track’s core essentials to form a narrative arch for every unique set. Their releases follow suit, taking only key elements from each rhythmic style to shape simplistic and deep music that captures their diverse influences and personal impressions.

Tom, Matt and Carlo together make up the London based production and DJ unit Dark Sky. Having met at music college, Dark Sky formed in 2008 out of a mutual love for the ever evolving London electronic music scene, a love that the trio have always reflected through not only their DJ sets but also their productions, drawing influences from original UK garage through to house, via drum & bass and hip hop. It wasn’t long before their forward thinking outlook on production and DJing got noticed and their debut 12″ was picked up by the Bristol imprint Black Acre. The release was met by rave reviews and since then further releases have been signed with consistent success to Pictures Music, Ninja Tune, Blunted Robots and Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons imprint.
“Dark Sky are winning fans by daring to be experimental, diverse and multi-textured but also noisily and thrillingly addictive” Resident Advisor “All things considered, the trajectory of London production trio Dark Sky is a little extraordinary. While most producers exercising within the soupy realm of dubstep, garage, funky and grime have fell victim to swells of hype and criticism as various buzz words and sonic trends zoom in and out of bass music fashion, these guys have stuck to a formula that benefits each song as a whole piece of music, as opposed to just focusing on staple elements reflective of the zeitgeist.” -Fact Magazine

Christian Andersen has never been one for genres and his productions as XI are no exception. His production-style, while often given simple tags, deserves a more nuanced description: Chop-suey beats, combined with complex sampling techniques highlight some of XI’s strengths. However, it’s his ability to create depth and take listeners on a journey within his productions that has him at the forefront of the next wave of bass music.
With his story well underway, XI is quickly gaining a reputation for crafting bass music that maintains a respect for the past, while hinting strongly at the future of electronic music.

JIMMY EDGAR DJ SET (Hotflush, Warp) Berlin
JIMMY EDGAR FACEBOOK
JIMMY EDGAR WEBSITE
Lover. Fighter. Prophet. Freak magnet. Time-traveler. Musician, photographer and designer Jimmy Edgar is a wayward star-child streaking across the cosmic dance-floor. Endowed with a supernatural feel for futuristic funk, the Detroit native has been bleeping and grinding about the Milky Way since he was a teenage humanoid. While his peers were worrying about their grades and popularity Edgar was spinning alongside his hometown’s DJ heroes and programming intricate beats that were unquestionably interplanetary communication disguised as dance music.
Influenced mostly by Jazz, funk, street beat and r&b in these early years, he began his musical pursuit by playing the drums in experimental bands and by making tape recordings. Most of these recordings, consisting mainly of pitch bent tape loops, cut edits, field recordings, and noise tracks, were the beginning of his experimentation with the technical aspects of production.
Nowadays Jimmy Edgar resides in Berlin. This Detroit-born producer/singer’s music often evokes the ambience of a city where the weekends can last all week and sex swings form part of legitimate club-going practice. Since moving to the city and putting out his recent LP “Majenta” on Hotflush, the producer’s embrace of techno’s second birthplace appears complete.

ASC (Auxiliary, Nonplus) SD,UK
ASC FACEBOOK
ASC WEBSITE
Growing up in different areas of England, on a steady diet of Motown, Techno and the blossoming UK Hardcore scene, his productions manage to encompass such a wide range of these influences. Starting out DJ’ing with a bunch of like-minded friends on pirate radio stations while still in school, ASC soon found himself getting interested in how the tracks he was playing were made. This led to an investment in a modest studio setup, which proved to be a defining point in James’ life.
An initial batch of tracks were written between 1997-1999, and eventually a 7 track demo appeared, of which 6 were signed to West Midlands based Nu Directions, and the remaining track was signed to LTJ Bukem’s well known Good Looking Records. After a handful of successful releases on these labels and a few others, James started his own label, Covert Operations, which went on to put out a total of 30 vinyl releases & 8 CD’s between 2000 and 2009.
After receiving much praise for his intricately detailed and well thought out productions, ASC amassed a serious back catalogue of releases on some of the most forward thinking labels out there, such as 720 Degrees, Offshore, and Paradox’s Outsider label. 2010 has seen the release of Nothing Is Certain, the album James released on Instra:mental’s popular NonPlus+ label, to great critical acclaim. Widespread reviews have cited it as one of the best electronic music long players for the year. Hot on the heels of that, ASC has launched his new imprint, Auxiliary.
If this wasn’t enough to keep ASC busy, September 2010 saw the release of a project entitled ‘Music For Pictures’. Liquid Cinema’s head honcho Jeff Rona asked James to create a library of music strictly with the idea of them being used for TV, film and other forms of media in mind. The title was a nod to the classic Brian Eno LP. Music For Film, and what James has come up with, might well be praised with the same regard in many years to come.
You could say the future is bright for ASC, but that’s more than an understatement.

One of the emerging bright lights of Los Angeles’ club scene, Dahlia Lachs aka Modesty has begun to earn a reputation far beyond what her moniker suggests. Skillfully blending deep grooves with strong rhythms and a multitude of breaks, stutters, and effects, Modesty delivers sets that reflect her early Latin and disco influences but consistently finds ways to interpret, re-invent or advance these sounds in new directions with often surprising and unexpected results.
Since walking away from a career in fashion to pursue her musical interests, Lachs has continued to prove over and over again, her acumen and skill behind the decks performing regularly at underground events in Los Angeles, New York and Denver and earning coveted opening slots for internationally recognized producers such as Alex Under, Miss Fitz, Mikael Stavostrand, Ryan Crosson and Lee Curtiss. She has also played at events by internationally respected promotional outfits such as Droid Behaviour, Resolute NY, and Detroit Underground. In 2012, she performing at the annual Detroit Underground after party during Movement: Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival.
Modesty continues to hone her craft as a DJ performing as often as possible both at home and with an eye toward gigs abroad, and while admittedly “dabbling in some production”, unlike many other DJ/Producers she continues to explore the possibilities involved in what some might call a lost art, that of mixing records, pure and simple.

GRENIER (Tectonic, Frite Nite) SF
GRENIER FACEBOOK
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dean J. Grenier, (A.K.A DJG), landed in the Bay Area underground dance music scene 2006 with his first 12” ”Shadow Skanking” b/w “Joyful Sound” on Narco.Hz, two slices of lithe, slick dubstep. Immediate airplay for “Joyful Sound” on Rinse FM and drops in the clubs from prominent DJs like N-Type quickly propelled DJG to the forefront of American bass music producers early on in his career.
Grenier’s production style is rich and welcoming, sometimes visceral but never anything less than evocative. Now considered a veteran of the American scene, Grenier (as DJG) self-released the two-disc Voids collection in 2010, revealing not only a clever grasp of dubstep and dnb but ambient soundscapes, and since then he’s released on labels like Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint, Headhunter’s Transistor, Frite Nite, Pushing Red and Wheel & Deal Records. Now operating under the name Grenier his recent productions see him moving in a more experimental direction, dropping the tempo to as low as 125BPM while playing around with rhythmic structures that hint at soulful house, garage, and other weird shapes, all imbued with the warm melodic embrace he’s always kept hidden beneath the beats. With forthcoming releases on Tectonic, Photek Productions, Get Darker and Frite Nite (with LA’s Salva), 2012 looks to be a banner year for Grenier, as he continues work on his debut album. DJs ranging from Mary Anne Hobbs, Mala, Pearson Sound, 2562, Pinch, Addison Groove, Salva, Photek, N-Type, Distal and many more have been supporting DJG’s recent and forthcoming releases.
Grenier’s performance behind the decks reveals a wide-ranging taste and smart grip on all sorts of music, elegantly-paced sets full of his own productions and like-minded efforts from others. His DJ talents have brought him all over the world, including a recent set at the legendary club Fabric in London and a tour around Europe in 2011, and back home in North America he’s headlined British Columbia’s Bass Coast Festival.

His label, which has emerged as one of North America’s premiere sources of West Coast electronic bass music, explores all corners of the electronic soundscape and harnesses diversity to produce composotions that transcend genre boundaries.
A Chicago native who developed his craft in San Francisco and currently resides in Los Angeles, Salva is an alum of the Red Bull Music Academy Class of 2011. He has produced exclusive mixes for Mary Anne Hobbs, The FADER, and XLR8R, while being asked to remix the likes of Miguel Migs, Rainbow Arabia, Om Unit and others. Honing his talents as one of the cornerstones of the Friends of Friends label alongside Shlohmo and Mexicans With Guns, Salva has released his debut full-length, ‘Complex Housing’, and the ‘Yellobone’ EP, both to critical acclaim (Pitchfork, FADER, FACT, and many others).
Salva’s audacity results in a complex collection of dips into house motifs, grooves in smooth boogie funk, and audience roiling massive bass waves. With support from BBC’s Benji B, the UK’s Night Slugs imprint (Bok Bok, Girl Unit), and the Low End Theory residents (Gaslamp Killer, DJ Nobody, Daddy Kev), it’s The FADER’s Julianne Shepherd that sums up the man best: “Paul Salva is a funky motherfucker”.

DISTAL FACEBOOK
Forgetting bpm and genre to the masses, Distal relies only on his signature sound alone to leave its mark. He produces a wide array of moods, tempos and rhythms, often taking influences from his early childhood love of techno, jungle and hardcore.
In early 2010 Distal started his own label ‘Embassy Recordings’ with childhood friend Ethan Anderson (MITE). Soon there after in the summer of 2010 he would receive his inaugural physical vinyl release with the legendary label Soul Jazz Records. This would be the launch pad for his career landing him releases on stalwart labels such as Tectonic and Tube10 and performing at places like the world renowned Fabric in London touring globally alongside artists like Pearson Sound and Africa Hi Tech.
From his initial release in 2010 until now in 2012 Distal has put out almost a dozen 12” vinyl releases and many more digital releases, collaborations and remixes for prolific labels like Frite Nite and Trouble & Bass. But his biggest accomplishment to date is his newly released 14 track album on Tectonic titled ‘Civilization’

ADDISON GROOVE (50Weapons/ Swamp 81/ Tectonic) UK
ADDISON GROOVE FACEBOOK
Addison Groove (aka Antony Williams) started life under a different pseudonym altogether. Recording as Headhunter, with an LP and 12” releases on the influential Tempa label stretching back to 2007, he achieved legendary status within the dubstep scene. His work at the deeper end of the spectrum graced the label an impressive 7 times, a figure matched only by Skream. This work looked set to continue until 2010 when, seemingly out of nowhere, he crafted one of the biggest bass music tracks of the decade, ‘Footcrab’, under the new name of Addison Groove.
The response to ‘Footcrab’ was phenomenal, receiving critical and commercial success in equal measure across the dance music scene. Getting plays not only from the dubstep DJs that Williams was used to reaching, it also found its way into the record boxes of techno and house heavyweights such as Aphex Twin, Surgeon, Ricardo Villalobos and Mr Scruff, bringing an enormous new audience to his music in the process. Taking influences from the Chicago ghetto tek and juke scenes, Addison Groove’s impact on UK bass music has been colossal and unprecedented, sparking a huge interest in these styles from his peers and the listening public alike.

Futra Launch Party Feat DVS1, SAMO SOUND BOY, EEZIR, KNYPHY + VJ Fader + Artist Showcase
THE FUTRA LAUNCH PARTY FEATURING …
DVS1 (house, acid, classics set)
(Hush, Klockworks, Transmat) MPLS/Berlin
Zak aka DVS1 (devious one), is one of the most prominent figures in the Midwest/US dance music landscape today. A local DJ favorite since the mid nineties, DVS1 continues to move floors with a combination of deep musical knowledge, unparalleled enthusiasm, and a vinyl collection of more than 10,000 records. Zak’s deep roots and his bold and uncompromising nature have won him great respect as a passionate and outspoken defender and promoter (HUSH) of quality music.
Zak began DJing in New York in the early nineties, focusing on the acid sounds of that time. After relocating to Minneapolis in the mid 90’s, his style evolved, into something more complex, deeper and more rhythmic. Since then, he has branched out into a wide variety of sounds from hard and fast, to deep and hypnotic, to slow and soulful. Rather than giving limiting names to the genres he plays, he describes the music as beats, rhythms, textures, and colors. His philosophy is that the genre distinctions themselves aren’t important the emotional content of the music is. This focus is readily apparent in the way he moves crowds both literally and figuratively by fusing together sounds that paint coherent, evocative, and powerful moods that are always appropriate for the time and place he is playing.
